The textile industry retains a record of the lowest efficiency in energy utilization and is one of the major energy-consuming industries. One of the main issues in the industry is power cuts due to high-technology machines including electronic control cards and driver-controlled motors. Conventional manufacturing industries like the textile industry are adopting more and more non-linear loads in their electrical networks. Most of the industrial processes, especially the pumps in water treatment, are either fed with AC drives or DC drives. AC drives are built on 6-pulse diode rectifiers which create significant harmonic currents and distort the current sinewave. DC drives involve even more power quality problems, not only harmonic distortions but also low power factor.

High harmonic currents in manufacturing plants increase energy losses in transformers and cables, contribute to the risk of the breakdown of electronic cards, and rapidly reduce the lifetime of plant equipment. Poor power quality can damage the system and cause production downtime and failure. Studies show that the losses caused by power quality are significantly high, around 15% of the annual net profit of the textile industry.
